The Art of the Menu
We all spend a lot of time salivating over menus, but how many of us think about what goes into designing one? Many people, it turns out. Amazingly, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, has a digital menu archive. As they describe it:
Menus, like book covers, are works of design and art and are primary sources for students of art and design, commercial artists and designers, restaurateurs, and hotel/hospitality programs and schools.
In it, you fill current and historical archival menus which provide an intriguing snapshot of cultural tastes and environmental factors, all contributing to those scrumptious eatables, going as far back as 1883. You can find the French influence, the Western influence, and even the Elvis influence. Check it out for yourself, and plunge yourself back into history.
